Green Giant Gets a Little Greener

Even though Green Giant has been committed to reducing its carbon footprint for along time, now they've decided to get a little greener in honor of Earth Day 2010.

Green Giant has always been footprint conscious of everything it plants, produces, packages and brings to your table.

Now to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, Green Giant is taking that commitment to the environment and going one giant step farther, by giving $200,000 to The Nature Conservancy!

The $200, 000 will help fund a project that will encourage greener farming practices to repair and protect a Minnesota natural treasure — the Root River, one of Minnesota’s (Green Giant's home location) best trout streams.

Throughout its long history, Green Giant has worked to reduce its environmental footprint through many eco-conscious efforts including:

• Using less land and water needed to grow vegetables

• Packing vegetables in smaller, lighter cans, which use less fuel to deliver them to supermarket shelves

• Using traditional seed breeding methods over the last 35 years to double the amount of sweet corn grown on an acre of land

• Teaming up with growers to implant more efficient irrigation systems in their growing areas. These systems can reduce water use by more than a million gallons a year

• Switching to more earth-friendly paperboard packagaing for their frozen vegetables, this saves approximately 54,000 trees annually in the process
