Green Tomatoes? Let's Party! by Carol King

Perhaps, dear gardener, you have a plethora of unripe tomatoes in your garden. I do not. I got perhaps 50 tomatoes from my “Sweet 100s” (thinking of changing its name to “Sweet Tens”), exactly two “roma” tomatoes, and four “early girls”. I have one plant that did not set one single tomato. That is it; failure of great magnitude. If you were more successful than I, here are a few tips on dealing with green tomatoes.

To speed-ripen on the vine try these:
• Stop watering. This encourages ripening.
• Root prune the plant. Dig into the soil 6-8” deep and cut around a circle 12” from the stem. Shake the plant but don’t dig it up. This will stress the plant and the fruit will ripen faster.
• Pinch off any flowers, small fruit, new shoots, and suckers. It’s too late for them to become anything. Do this now and all the plants energy will go toward ripening.

When frost is expected, try these:
• Cover the plant completely and anchor so the wind doesn’t blow it off. Use old blankets, thick plastic, or anything similar and make sure it goes all the way to the ground providing the plant with trapped warmth.
• Harvest the tomatoes by pulling the plant from the ground and hanging it upside down in a garage or other shelter. Check often for ripe ones.
• Pick the pink ones and put them on the counter to ripen
• Pick the green tomatoes and store them in a shallow tray lined with newspaper. They need 60-70 degrees and no light. The warmth ripens them not light.

Or to heck with it all! Just maybe, dear gardener, you are sick of the garden and don’t want plants hanging upside down in the garage dropping tomatoes all over your car; or boxes of green tomatoes all over the place or counters covered with tomatoes. I say give it up! Invite your friends and neighbors over and have a “Fried Green Tomato Party”. They are yummy, unhealthy, fried, and a real crowd pleaser. Here’s my recipe which was taught to me by my Texas cousins. You know it’s good.

Emma Jean and Rita Jane’s Fried Green Tomatoes*

Ingredients: green tomatoes, eggs, milk, flour, cornmeal, salt, pepper, vegetable oil for frying
Wash and dry the tomatoes.
Slice about ¼ inch thick.
Salt each slice on both sides and set aside.
Beat egg(s) with a splash of milk making a batter
Put cup or so of flour in a plate, pepper it a little and mix with a fork
Put cup or so of corn meal in a plate, pepper it a little and mix with a fork. I prefer Bob’s Red Mill medium or coarse ground.
Put ½ inch of good vegetable oil in skillet. An iron skillet is the best. Heat to 350 degrees or a good frying temperature. You may have to discard the oil and add new if you are frying a lot of the tomatoes.
Dip salted tomato slices into flour, then into egg mixture, then into cornmeal.
Plop in the skillet and brown both sides.

*Quantities in this recipe depend on the number of tomato slices you are frying. It’s a very forgiving recipe.

Good with a nice chardonnay or cold beer of choice!

Some interesting facts about fried food:
*Fried green tomatoes did not originate in the South. They were being eaten in Italy as early as the sixteenth century.
*The French embassy declared that the french fries were Belgian in origin. This claim was accepted by Belgium and they claim that they were cooking up french fries in 1680in Dinant, Belgium.
*Some fried foods served at the 2008 Texas State Fair were Texas fried jelly bellies, chicken fried bacon, deep fried s’mores, and fried banana splits. They offer the Big Tex Choice Award each year for the best fried food.
*It's customary to eat foods fried in oil to commemorate the miracle of Hanukkah.
There is no chicken in Chicken-Fried Steak.
*According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, from 1999 until November 14, 2006, there have been 119 incidents involving fires or burns associated with turkey fryers in the United States.
*Scots consume thousands of the deep-fried Mars Bars each week.
*Elvis loved his “peanut butter and nanner” fried sandwiches.
*Many urban legends contain references to people inadvertently finding and eating something unpleasant fried in their food order; usually a rodent or animals we consider to be pets.

My Good Greetings

Green is going to be the new red this holiday season with the launch of mygoodgreetings.com.

For the first time, beautiful custom photo holiday greeting cards, envelopes and matching address labels, are completely earth-conscious – from printing to packaging – every step of the way.

“First and foremost, we offer great designs on a website that makes it easy for customers to create their own custom cards,” said Rene’ Bross, co-founder and lead designer at My Good Greetings. “Finding a cost-effective way to print cards on beautiful papers with the highest recycled fiber content available completed our vision.”

Mygoodgreetings.com fills an important niche that was previously missing from the custom photo cards, invitations and announcements market. Using a Certified Green Business printing company means that everything is printed on digital presses with biodegradable toners, and even a water-based coating. The 100% recycled Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certified recycled card stock meets strict environmental and socioeconomic standards, is produced with a high Post Consumer Waste (PCW) content fiber and responsibly harvested forests - never from old growth timber stands or rainforests. Even the electricity used to produce the stock is offset with Green-e® certified renewable power sources.

The paper’s superior archival quality is acid-free for long lasting color that won’t fade.

“Our family has been sending photo greeting cards for years,” said Tom Bross, co-founder of My Good Greetings. “Last year, trying to make green choices where we can, we wanted to print our photo cards on recycled stock but were shocked to discover how difficult it was to find recycled paper options. So we created My Good Greetings because we know that other people are looking for this kind of solution too.”

Mygoodgreetings.com offers holiday greeting cards that range from hip, fresh and contemporary to simple, clean and classic in design. A sophisticated, yet easy-to-use online interface lets customers choose from a wide selection of designer cards.

Ordering is as easy as uploading a favorite photograph, customizing the text and approving the final design. The impeccably designed, reasonably priced custom greetings will be printed and sent within 7-10 days.

Why buy green? Because Green is Good.™

Located in Spokane, Washington, My Good Greetings was founded on the principle that it is possible to make a lasting impression in print, and be environmentally conscious at the same time. Utilizing Rene’ Bross’ 20 year experience as a graphic designer, the company has created sets of impeccably designed Custom Announcements (new baby, new puppy, new home, wedding, save-the-date, etc.), Custom Invitations (baby and bridal shower, birthday party, etc.), and Custom Stationery (thank you cards, address labels, etc.).

My Good Greetings uses a printer certified as a Bay Area Certified Green Business that utilizes environmentally safe products in every stage of their printing process, including biodegradable toners and digital presses, which emit 90% less Volatile Organic Compounds. Tips on How to Decorate for the Holidays While Remaining Environmentally-Friendly From Hunter Douglas

"The holiday season is nearing and with it comes a time of joyful celebration with special friends and family. But with rising energy costs and a troubled economy, many consumers are actively seeking options for sprucing up their décor to create a festive and inviting ambiance without breaking the bank. Also important is the trend towards going green and reducing energy use and costs. Hunter Douglas, North America’s leading manufacturer and marketer of custom window fashions, offers the following tips on how to create an environmentally-friendly and festive environment for the holiday season.
  • While wrapping presents to go under the tree, save any extra ribbon and use to “gift wrap” throw pillows like packages to give your sofa a festive feel. Adorn your walls with indoor wreaths made from scarves and a little boxwood to create a nice scent that brings you a taste of the outdoors while you stay warm inside.
  • Use recyclable, colorful paper when wrapping presents to create an inviting atmosphere with a rich color palette for your living room. After the presents are opened, either save the paper and ribbon to re-use next year or take all used paper to your local recycling center.
  • To keep warm air in and cold air out and your energy bills in check, consider replacing your current window coverings with Duette® Architella™ honeycomb shades from Hunter Douglas, which, with their highly energy-efficient honeycomb-within-a-honeycomb design, can reduce heat loss at the window by up to 50 percent. They also keep cool air in during summer months, making this a one-time investment in your home that delivers savings all year round.
  • Use fewer lights when decorating the tree and instead use bright colored and reflective ornaments to light up the room. Plug in tree lights and nearby TVs, VCRs and appliances to a power strip that turns them all off with one easy click, therefore reducing energy costs for unused electronics.
  • Although it might sound surprising, turn your heat down and your ceiling fan on. Lowering your thermostat by just one degree can reduce costs by about four percent, while a ceiling fan helps distribute the warm air across the room. Hang mistletoe from the ceiling fan to add a romantic and cheerful holiday touch to the room.
  • For a soft holiday look, consider using Silhouette® window shadings featuring soft fabric vanes suspended between two sheer facings that gently diffuse incoming light to create a warm glow across the room. These shadings are the perfect backdrop for a tree surrounded by colorful presents on that special holiday morning.

With these tips, decorating for the holidays while going green is easier than you think.

“It is important to make the holiday season as stress-free and pleasant as possible,” said Donna Lobosco, Director of Brand Communications for Hunter Douglas. “By providing tips that are quick and simple, we hope to help consumers create a stylish setting for holiday entertaining while saving on energy costs and doing their part to protect the environment at the same time.”

Hunter Douglas Inc. is a national sponsor of Habitat for Humanity, covering windows in every Habitat home built in the U.S. and Canada. They are the leading manufacturer of custom window coverings in North America.

A Walk Around Minneapolis

After a short nap this afternoon we decided to take a stroll down to the Mississippi River. We found that Minneapolis is a beautiful town. Built around a falls, it is a very old town with a rich history of mills and flour production. All along the riverside are the signs and remnants of a once flourishing grain and flour industry:

The River itself is beautiful as well:

They have built a series of locks for boats to navigate up and down river from the falls. We got to see this small powerboat go through:

Surrounding the riverfront is a very modern and large city with soaring skyscrapers and an interesting blend of historic and modern architecture:

Of course, we had a lot of fun along the way:

Desiring God 2008 - Final Session, John Piper

John Piper was absolutely riveting this morning as he brought the message "Is There Christian Eloquence?" Using 1 Cor 1:17 and 2 Cor 2:1 as his text, he was able to lead us to the conclusion that God will glorify Himself in spite of..... and at times.... because of our language and how we use it.

The thought of this should keep us humble, knowing that God will use us they way He intends to use us and is reliant upon neither our expertise nor our weaknesses for Him to save people.

With Piper, the message is always solid and challenging. There are a lot of teachers who can provide that level instruction but Pastor John always accompanies the message with his own distinctive and energetic brand of total engagement. His full-body immersion into his material and the passion he delivers it with are as much a part of the learning experience as the message itself is.

Dr. Piper somehow managed to demonstrate a very high degree of Christian eloquence while maintaining a humble and contrite nature, giving God the glory for everything He has done. What he showed us in about 75 minutes was the pure and unadulterated essence of the message he brought to us; if we are humble before the Lord, careful to give Him the glory, then God can use our eloquence for His kingdom. John can be very engaging in his exhortation and involvement. Short of physically taking you to a Piper conference, I thought I'd try to give you a little taste of what he's like to listen to:

His message was inspiring to Pastors and should be a blessing to anyone involved in the arts, particularly poetry or songwriting. You can listen to it here. As an added treat, you should be able to see the entire session at the same location sometime over the next 24 hours.

The entire conference has been a refreshing breeze and a challenge at the same time. This level of teaching always inspires and stretches the spirit but also brings a level of newness and excitement for what's ahead. For me, it's an opportunity to sit and be ministered to. But much more than being ministered to, conferences like this one also serve to equip me. I can see some of the great theological minds of our time, sit under their teaching, watch their technique and approach to the Scriptures and be instructed by and motivated by the Holy Spirit at the same time.

I come away thankful to men like John Piper for making something like this available for such a reasonable price. To be able to go this deep in such a short period of time with so many excellent teachers is pretty amazing.

But I come way with another blessing as well.

I talk to other Pastors and see other churches and am constantly reminded of how special our congregation is. That I am able to attend something like this is only because the folks at WBF are so gracious and patient in helping me to become equipped to stand in the pulpit on Sunday mornings. We are blessed mightily in what God has done among us and through us and I am so appreciative to God....and to our brothers and sisters at WBF for making it all possible. I'm excited to bring it all back home and see what God does with it!

We fly home EARLY tomorrow morning!

Desiring God 2008 - Session #6, Paul Trip

Tonight, Paul Tripp was our speaker. He spoke on the power of our words and whose kingdom they serve, the kingdom of God or the kingdom of me, "The Deadly War of Words".

This was one of the most powerful messages I've ever heard on how we speak to each other and why we talk the way we talk. You can find a comprehensive set of notes here. It's worth a look.

Although the notes are a good read, part of the power of this message was in the way Dr. Tripp delivered it. He kept us totally engaged for the entire talk. It was Scripturally correct and had profound real world application. I highly recommend, if you have the time (about an hour), that you listen to the whole message. You can listen here or you can download it here.

So far, the entire conference has been well organized and the teaching amazing. Piper has chosen his speakers well and the theme has developed exquisitely as we moved from session to session. We have been challenged by the teaching and blessed by the worship.

Tomorrow morning, we hear John Piper. We're really looking forward to his message. There's been a growing anticipation throughout the entire conference. Each successive speaker has further developed the theme and brought something valuable to the table. Piper will bring the keynote message. His vision for the conference has been well articulated and it will be a blessing now to hear his heart.

Desiring God 2008 Conference - Day 2

After some sweet worship this morning, we heard from Bob Kauflin in Session #3. He gave a beautiful talk on worship and what part corporate singing plays in our desire to honor God. His talk was based on the question, "Why Does God Tell His People to Sing?" Bob is Director of Worship for Sovereign Grace Ministries and has written "Worship Matters".

Why does God tell us to sing? Here's the gist of Kauflin's answer:

God Himself sings (Zeph 3:17, Heb 2:12, Eph 5:19) Music and the word belong together in that music serves the word and the word serves music in three ways:

1. Singing can help us remember words. So the church should use melodies that are effective and we should sing words God wants us to remember (Col 3:16), our lyrics should be a reflection of our teaching.

2. Singing can help us engage emotionally with words. As such, we need a broad range of emotions in our songs. We must also differentiate between being emotionally moved and spiritually enlightened. Singing should be an emotional as well as a spiritual event.

3. Singing can help us use words to demonstrate and express our unity. This requires other people. Singing together binds us together but we must be clear that it is the Gospel that unites us, not the music. In Eph 2:4, Rev 5:9-10, God's people are united by the focus of their worship, not the style of their music.

This was a powerful teaching on worship. I would highly recommend that we all take time to listen to it here. You can listen online or download it for your iPod.

Session #4 was led by Mark Driscoll, Pastor of Mars Hill church in Seattle, author and head of Acts 29 Ministries. Mark's talk was "How Sharp the Edge". In it, he gave a brilliant defense of the use of sarcasm, humor and satire in battling against the enemies of the Gospel. Here are his main points:

Christians are to:

1. Feed the sheep (each other) with gracious kindness (Eph 4:32)

2. Rebuke the swine (Isaiah 3:14-16, Amos 4:10, Amos 6:4-6, Ezek 16:36 ff, Ezek 23:18-21). God uses harsh words to describe bad things (Prov 22:13, Prov 19:24).

3. Shoot the wolves (false teachers). "With the wolves, you shoot. With the sheep, you weep", (Matt 23:13-36, Phil 3:2, Col 2:8, Col 2:18, 1 Tim 1:3-7, 1 Tim 1:19, 1 Tim 4:1-2, 1 Tim 4:7, 1 Tim 6:3-5, 2 Tim 2:14-18, 2 Tim 2:23, Titus 1:10-14, 2 Peter 2:1-3, 2 Peter 3:16, 1 john 2:18). Paul does this in Gal 5:7-12, Gal 5:13-14. He even names names in 1 Tim 1:19-20, 2 Tim 2:17 and 2 Tim 4:14.

4. Bark at the dogs or, in other words, mock religious types. The Bible uses humor to show the hypocrisy of religious people (Ex 32:24, Isaiah 64:6, 1 Kings 18:27, Isaiah 44:15-17, Matt 15:14, Matt 11:6, Philippians 3:8)

Driscoll has been criticized roundly for his style of preaching. What we heard today was theologically sound, Scripturally accurate and passionately delivered. His critics should listen to this talk, in particular the end in which he contextualizes his ministry. It's worth the time. You can hear it here.

The Session #5 speaker was Daniel Taylor, Professor of Literature and Writing at Bethel University and author. His talk was based on the concept that propositional truth needs stories to provide a check and application. We are all called to a life of faith and faith is a story in which we are all characters.

His talking points were based on the proposition that "The single best way of conceiving of faith and the life of faith is by seeing it as a story in which you are a character". Faith is a story in that:

1. Stories are God's ideas. His story s the Great Story.

2. It fits how we are made and how we relate to each other by telling our stories to each other.

3. Stories engage our entire being, intellect and emotions. No one believes anything important without engaging the intellect. Our beliefs cannot be separated from our life experiences which are captured in stories.

4. Stories are about choices and consequences.

5. Stories have the power to change us.

6. Stories are directive, they tell us how to change.

7. Stories are strong and complex enough to contain pain, suffering, failure and mystery.

8. Stories call us to action.

9. Every human being needs a Master Story that repeats over and over, telling us why we are. For Christians, that story is the Gospel.

You can listen to Taylor's talk here.

Here are some shots from around the conference today:

Desiring God 2008 - 1st Session, Sinclair Ferguson

What a beginning to the conference! Dr. Ferguson opened with an exposition of James 3:1-12. He made four basic points of the necessity of controlling the tongue in the life of a believer:

1. The tongue is difficult to control (James 3:2). If we can control our tongue, we can control ourselves (James 1:26)

2. The tongue has a disproportionate power for its' size (James 3:3-5)

3. The tongue can cause destruction (James 3:4-5).

4. There is a deadly inconsistency that plagues the tongue (James 3:9-11)

Ferguson's solution to this problem was "20 Resolutions". They can be found here.

This whole teaching, Dr. Ferguson was able to establish quite clearly, is seen in the gospel in that we must first see, as Isaiah did (Isaiah 5 & 6) the depth of our sin if we are ever to receive and understand the height of God's grace (James 1:18). As God brings His regeneration (James 3) our hearts are transformed and that will lead to a transformed tongue.

You can hear the whole session here. The conference is making the audio portions of the sessions available within an hour of their presentation. The videos will be available within 24 hours. All this is for free. Everything can be found at Desiring God. I think John Piper and the folks at Desiring God Ministries should be highly commended for making so much high quality material available without charge

There are over 3200 people attending the conference. The Book Store is well stocked and massive. One of the things that is immediately noticeable is the large number of younger people attending as you'll see in the slide show below. It really warmed my heart to see a young man, probably less than 20 years old, engaging Dr. Ferguson after his session. It's comforting to know the future of the church and sound doctrine is alive and well in these young people.

The last session was a panel discussion with John Piper, Mark Driscoll (very impressive) and Sinclair Ferguson, who gave his testimony.

Before the Conference Opens, Desiring God 2008

We walked around Minneapolis this morning while we waited for the conference to begin. What a beautiful city! It's filled with fountains, sidewalk cafes and interesting architecture:

Thanks to an angel who gave us a very special gift, we ate lunch at (where else?):

Then we headed over the the massively huge and busy Minneapolis Convention Center. The Conference will be on one of the lower levels and we were able to go down there and scope out the area. It was cool knowing that in a few short hours there would be thousands of people crowding these areas:

After that, we went to......

FUN RETRO PICTURES, BROUGHT TO YOU BY WWW.YEARBOOKYOURSELF.COM

I was boring in my office few days ago so I checked my niece's Facebook. To my surprise and cheekiness, I saw her pictures, that have been pimped by using the YearBook Yourself.com. Tips to do this, pick your picture that is looking straight and if possible not exceeding 1MB. I adjusted my picture, resizing it to smaller size and finally these are some funny looks from the 50's to the 90's.

Hmmm... this is cool. 50's was all about short curled and pointy eyeglass.

One hot foxy momma! My neck is darker. LOL

End of 70's. Every girl was hitting this style. Remember Noor Kumalasari.

This is retro. Very very new wave. Reminds me of Noreen Noor or Jennifer Beals. Flash Dance anyone?

Minneapolis - Our Arrival At the Desiring God 2008 Conference.

We got to Minneapolis around 7:30 PM after a relatively short (2 hour) layover in Chicago. We picked up our rental car (got a free upgrade to a very nice Hyundai Sonata) and motored into the downtown area after stopping at a Burger King for a quick dinner.
We're staying at the Marriott about 7 blocks from the Minneapolis Convention Center. It looks like we'll be able to walk there each day for the Conference which starts tomorrow.

When we got to the hotel, we were blessed, yet again, by a free room upgrade. We're on the 29th floor of the hotel in a King Room with Concierge privileges (read, "free breakfast and late night snacks"). God is so good to us! Here's some pics of our room:

Here's our view!

I think God's just getting us ready for an even greater blessing over the next 3 days! Of course, I'll be taking my camera to the conference and I'll provide plenty of pictures and a summary of each speaker here each day.

Pray for us.....we're praying for you.

Update from Ron and Angie Onks in Australia

This update came in from Ron and Angie Onks, missionaries to Australia where Ron ministers to middle school and high school students. Ron is a gifted Evangelist and has a passion for the full Gospel and preaching it to kids. His ministry is fruitful and they are a hard working family.

September 20, 2008

Dear Pastor Kuvakas & Saints of Warrenton Bible Fellowship,

Yesterday as Ron was finishing a school class where he had just taught religious education, a male student said to Ron, “I have asked Jesus Christ to come into my life, but how can I know that I really am saved?” The entire class listened to Ron’s answer to this question; this is because many of the students in that class have told Ron they have trusted in Jesus Christ as their Saviour. We have given to the students who ask, information concerning how they can know they are saved. We are delighted to share with you that about two dozen more students have trusted in Jesus Christ in Ron’s 16 classes. In the past few weeks two more students also have asked where they can get a Bible. Our church is buying more Bibles to give as a gift when the students enquire about getting a Bible: the students are thrilled to get their own Bible as a gift. We have been faithfully sharing with the students the truth of God’s love, but also about His judgment. We have found that using the “10 Commandments” to convict the students of their constant sin, makes a big difference as they turn to the Lord for forgiveness with a heart of repentance. Many other students recently have been asking Ron how they should pray to ask Jesus Christ to come into their lives to forgive them. How wonderful it will be one day in the future to see in Heaven so many Australian souls because you have cared to make an eternal impact in their lives by supporting this ministry with your prayers and finances: we thank you so much.

Teachers and students in Ron’s classes continue listening and asking questions. Yesterday another secular school teacher was thrilled to learn from Ron that we don’t have to ‘only’ eat fish as a meat on Fridays; she had always been taught that. Ron gets all sorts of questions that the previous years’ religious education teachers would never answer. The most common questions asked are about dinosaurs, Heaven, Hell, the Bible, baptism and church. This past term focused on “God’s Creation” from Genesis and it has been a great opportunity to teach the students where sin came from, where Cain got his wife, about the global flood, the ark, etc. The students have been surprised to learn that the earth is young and that mankind lived very long ages only a few thousand years ago before the global flood. We see the students objections dismissed when Ron explains that dinosaurs existed with mankind, they were originally vegetarians and they were on the ark (either in eggs or as baby dinosaurs). Ron has come up with an acronym name for the “forbidden fruit” that Adam and Eve ate; the students kept calling it an apple, but Ron calls it the “Kogae” (pronounced Koh-gay) fruit; why, because it came from the tree of the Knowledge Of Good And Evil. The kids at times still call it an apple. A few students have started subscribing to “Creation” magazine and other students have been taking smaller magazines from Ron. As Ron was leaving one class recently, the students called out “we love you.” Later that morning, two students walked up to Ron and hugged him; that is always awkward because we can’t hug the students for obvious reasons. Even permission to get pictures of the classes is very difficult: we hope to have pictures of one class in the next letter. Ron’s students know he has a genuine concern for their souls.

We mentioned in our last letter how we have witnessed to Daniel; a man who said he now realizes there is no real proof for evolution and that he had been told a stack of lies by his college teachers, who never questioned what they had been taught. Daniel recently took more DVDs from us to watch. Please continue to pray for the Holy Spirit to convict him about the Word of God and its reliability; he needs to understand that his sinful conduct has separated him from God, but he can have a restored relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Some other good news is that Ron has NOT dropped any of his religious education classes at the Oxenford State School as he mentioned he might do in our last letter: their conduct was terrible when he started teaching there. However, those two classes now have greatly improved in behavior. Some trouble students are gone and others, who were misbehaving, are keenly listening: the power of prayer, PTL!

Ron mentioned the name of “Jesus Christ” to some young students at the Gaven State School and they immediately said to him, “you said a naughty word.” Wow! How sad that they only know Jesus Christ’s name as a ‘swear’ word. Furthermore at that same school, another religious education teacher is telling students that the “Adams apple” in a man’s throat is punishment because Adam sinned and ate the forbidden “apple;” this reinforces to us how poorly learned many of the other religious education teachers are. A liberal pastor of a struggling main stream denomination church here in Australia, three weeks ago told Ron that we should never tell the kids about God’s judgment, but only of God’s love. We face a battle of many fronts- false teaching, erroneous teachers who don’t believe all of God’s word, opposition from the unsaved and of course ungodly spiritual forces. We are so grateful that God has placed us in this evangelism school ministry so that we can teach students the entire truth of God’s Word. A recent study by the Barna Group, a well known Christian research group, concluded that what you believe by the time you are thirteen years old, is what you will die believing: our lifelong beliefs clearly are shaped in the early years of our development. The primary school kids are much more accepting and trusting toward God. What a responsibility we have while the door is still open to reach these young students with the gospel; we must “keep at it” as the day eventually may come when the door to such a great opportunity may be closed. We thank you for being a part of this ministry team.

Allow us please to give you a bit of miscellaneous news. Ron’s sister, Donna in Tennessee, has recovered well from her heart-attack. Angie still has constant back pain which is caused by scoliosis; she is being monitored by doctors and she has trouble sitting for long periods. Our little church is fine but we have two very sick members with their prognosis not looking good. Both of their names are Les; please pray for them and their families. Please pray for our safety and for the parsonage here: three years ago a super-cell storm did much damage to our parsonage and again such super storm-cells have been in our area this week.

We are trying to be good stewards of God’s funds: thus if you don’t mind, we are making changes in how we keep in touch with our support team. This is necessary because of high petrol and grocery (due to drought) cost and we were just informed that over the next few years our annual water cost is going to increase up to 800%; yes that is correct. Thus when possible, we are sending our letters to our support team via e-mail to help cut postage cost which has increased again; our postage cost has been well over $1200 a year; we hope to cut it to $400 per year. If you have a better e-mail address or multiple e-mail addresses, please notify us, so that we can send this letter to all of your e-mail addresses. Please DO NOT forget to inform us of any changes to your email address; we will need to know for future contact. Thank you for understanding. After reading this letter, please with a simple ‘one-line’ message, send us an email confirmation that you got this letter; we want to make sure our support team is receiving this communiqué without fail.

Please continue to pray that our Lord will supply much more needed financial support for this fruitful ministry. We are greatly encouraged by your love and we thank you for being a part of this team via your prayers and finances. May God richly bless you for your faithful support to this Australian ministry!

Please also remember to continue praying for the following:

For other long term financial support to help replace some matured ‘home going’ supporters.

For wisdom and protection as Ron teaches in Australian schools.

For the Lord to mature in Christ some of Ron’s former students who are now Christians.

For open doors in school students’ hearts.

For our church growth and the health of the mature aged
members.

God Of War III

Este es el video del cuarto juego de la saga GoW (God Of War) me encanta esta saga y la historia es increible; este video tambien ya es viejo (E3 2008). Disfruta ;)

Where Do We Go From Here?

Well, we've finished 1 Cor 14 and this brings the "30 Day Challenge" to an end, albeit somewhat early.. It would be great of we could share some experiences some of you have had in looking at the Scriptures this closely for this period of time. You're welcome to email me or to leave a comment. To comment, all you have to do is click on the "comments" link below and write your comment out.

Here are some interesting questions you can consider:
  • Was the teaching what you expected after reading the passage?
  • What insights did you get from the repeated readings?
  • Did you have the opportunity to use the verses at any time?
  • Will this affect your Bible reading in the future?
So, what do we do with what we've learned? Wouldn't it be great if we could do this together regularly? I'd like to send out the passage I'll be speaking on the Monday before I speak. That would give us all a chance to get familiar with it before we come together on Sunday morning. It would also give the Holy Spirit the opportunity to use the Word in our lives while we prepare to hear a teaching on it. I believe it will also make the teaching more meaningful.

Let me know what you think. I'll be preaching on 1 Cor 15:1-11 in two weeks.

The Desiring God Conference

Kelly and I leave for Minneapolis tomorrow afternoon. We will be attending the 2008 Desiring God Conference held at John Piper's church, Bethlehem Baptist Church.

Aside from it being a much appreciated break for a few days, the conference looks to be another great one jam, packed with well respected speakers and interesting workshops.

Conferences are time consuming and can be taxing on the brain but are always a blessing. I approach them the way I used to approach golf. The teaching can be absorbing and requires all of your attention but are strangely relaxing and rejuvenating at the same time. I think part of the attraction is the concentration required. If you're going to get anything out of a conference, you have to leave any distractions behind and focus on the teaching.

The great thing about a well staged conference is that the few days you spend there can stimulate your theological cortex and inspire you to pour yourself into the Word of God. I've never had a golf game do much more than make me tired from trying to find those balls that mysteriously wind up in the woods all the time. You come out of a conference exhausted but excited about what you've seen and heard. I guess it's like any other type of retreat. You spend a few days away from the distractions of the world and immersed in the Word of God...and you come back changed.

It's been a real blessing this year to be able to take Kelly with me. This will be the second conference we've gone to. She went with me to the T4G conference in Louisville earlier. To be fair to the church, we pay her expenses separately but both of us are happy to do that and she gets as much as I do out of the teaching.

We'll be back in town Monday evening. Meanwhile, I'll be blogging the conference daily. Pray for our travel and our family while we're gone!

The WBF Bookstore Is Open!

Here's an historic first. We have a new bookstore at WBF!

Situated where the old Library was in the center room of the townhouse and occupying a few of the shelves, at first, it is our thought that this can be a good way to make available the books and authors that help shape the thought and direction of WBF. It will also serve as a handy recommended reading resource and a place where we can stock books that go with our Sunday Schools and Bible studies.

You'll find a variety of books; topical, study resources, men's issues, women's issues, family/marriage, Bibles, Study Bibles, devotionals, light reading, doctrinal/theological topics, Apollos resources and more.

Books will be sold on the honor system. A wooden box will be placed on one of the shelves and the funds can be placed in the box. There will also be a clipboard near the box. It will be very helpful if those who buy a book will note it on the clipboard so we can restock the shelves.

For a limited time (until they are gone) there are a number of books that will be free of charge. Any book on the shelves that does not have a price label on the cover is free! There are a couple of really great study resources; "The Biblical Illustrator" (29 Volumes), "The Interpreters Bible" (11 Volumes and "Clarkes Commentaries "5 Volumes).

Please feel free to offer suggestions and recommendations. Pricing will be very competitive. Most of our inventory will come from Christian Book Distributors, a major online source for Christian books. We will be charging what we pay for the books with an additional $1 thrown in to cover shipping. These prices are usually about 20% below retail and frequently less than most brick and mortar stores.

One more thing, we are not looking for donations to the Bookstore. We want to be able to stock it with books that the staff and Elders have read or are, in some way, familiar with. We would appreciate your help in keeping to this policy.

Should Women Be Silent In Church?

We finished up Chapter 14 of 1 Corinthians Sunday. I pray I was able to bring clarity to the issue raised by 1 Cor 14:34-35 as well as 1 Tim 2:12.

The sermon is posted at the WBF Web Site. Just right click on the Sep 21 Sermon, "Tongues, Prophecy and the Church" to listen to or download the sermon.

Here's the PowerPoint slide show that goes along with the sermon:

THE BIRTHDAY BOY, TERUNG TETEK KAMBING AND BERSUNGKEI STORIES

THE BIRTHDAY BOY

Wassup readers?

Now is the time that I have the chance to update my blog.  Oh ya, Happy big 34th Birthday to my darling lollipop Papa Hippopotamus - hubby, look at my adorable Hippotamus....  feeling the joyous for his happy day (even though I was trying to surprise him but my attempt was failed when he tiptoed from behind to see me paying for the cake at the counter... LOL).  Wishing you the best, everything the best in your life and we love you so much Papa @ Peps!

TERUNG TETEK (BREAST) KAMBING  @ APPLE OF SODOM, MACKAW BUSH @ TITTY FRUIT

My boss gave me this weird fruit/veggie 2 days ago.  It's not edible but nice to be decoration so we did some camwhoring together!

Hubby says this fruit is cute, as cute as Pocoyo.  LOL.  I found these info on the web regarding this fruit.
Solanum mammosum
Family: Solanaceae
Nipple Fruit, Tit Plant, Apple of Sodom, Terong Susu, Cows Udder, Nyun Wenkibobi, Soresumba, Mackaw Bush, Titty Fruit, Pig Face

large shrub 5-10 ftsmall shrub 2-5 ftfull sunsemi-shademoderate waterblue/lavender/purple flowersthorny or spinyincuded in CD catalog
Very unusual bright yellow fruit looks like small pear-shaped tomatoes, with nipple-like protrusions. Violet colored flowers. It shows thorns on its stem. This is an erect tropical shrub growing up to 4" tall. The deeply lobed leaves have long spikes on its surface. The fruit is a round yellow berry with numerous brownish-red seeds in it. Fruiting branches can be used in tropical cut flower arrangements.

So since it's not edible, it is actually beneficial for Diabetic and Hypertension patients.  Prick the pointy end of the fruit and boil it for 2 hours then drink the water.  I have decided to bring the fruit home so I can get the seeds and plant it right away!

BERSUNGKEI @ BREAKFASTING TOGETHER

Yesterday we were invited for a 'bersungkei' (breakfasting) function at Sarawak's Club.  Hit the place just in time, few minutes before the 'Azan' (Prayer calling).

The starter normally as according to the 'Sunnah' must with the sweet things like sweet dates and here they served Sarawak's signature sweet layer cake.  I had a piece of Cucur Sayur too!  Cucur Sayur rocks!

The love boat comes and welcome aboard!  Arrays of cold platter like Sushi, Fried Crunchy  Vermicelli.  No sauce was given but David was lucky enough to be brainy, preparing himself sliced chillies with soy sauce.

Favourite dish!  Deep fried softshell crab. Yum yum.  Very meaty if compared to the one served at The Banquet.  2 pieces.  I had a mussel too, didn't take more even though it was nice.  To tell the truth I wasn't eating that much because I had McD's Spicy Hot Chicken Nuggets for lunch.  LOL.  I guess that the 'Sirap Bandung' made us felt so full last night.  Love the desserts, I mean the nangka (jackfruits) with pineapple and jellies in gula apong (palm sugar) concoction.

We left the place after 8 p.m. and had to wait for the heavy downpour to stop.  Reached home at almost 9 p.m.
