Pyrmont Bridge, Darling Harbour
Pyrmont Bridge is a swing bridge that crosses Cockle Bay at Darling Harbour and connects the inner city suburb of Pyrmont with the Sydney central business district. The bridge was opened in 1902 but closed to traffic in the 1980s when freeways south of Cockle Bay were built. It reopened as a pedestrian bridge with the redevelopment of Darling Harbour in 1988. It also carries an elevated monorail with a track that remains stationary so that the monorails can continue to cross even when the bridge swings open for large boats.

Pyrmont, Jones Bay Wharf
A view of Jones Bay Wharf, in the inner city suburb of Pyrmont, with Barangaroo and the Sydney Harbour Bridge in the distance. Jones Bay Wharf consists of Piers 19-21 of Pyrmont Wharves. This marina on Jones Bay sits beside Pier 21. The wharf and warehouse buildings were originally built in 1919, as part of Sydney's port facilities. After those port facilities were relocated to Port Botany, the buildings were redeveloped in 2003 into commercial space.

Pyrmont, lamp and bench
This lamp, tiered bench and decorative pergola are located at the Pyrmont end of the pedestrian walkway on the Anzac Bridge. I chose this photo to highlight Earth Hour, an annual event to to raise awareness of the need to take action on climate change. Participants switch off lights and electrical equipment for one hour at 8.30pm on the last Saturday of March. Earth Hour started in Sydney in 2007 with approximately 2.2 million people and 2,100 businesses taking part. It has grown every year and spread across the world, with 4,000 cities and 128 countries involved in 2010.

Pyrmont, Life From A Suitcase
'Life From A Suitcase' is a sculpture that is located in the inner city suburb of Pyrmont. This life size, cast bronze sculpture was created by Terrance Plowright and unveiled in 2010. It was originally commissioned by Paul Signorelli to represent three generations of his family . It was gifted to Australia as a celebration of immigration. It is located at Pyrmont Wharves 12 and 13 which was Sydney's reserve passenger terminal until 1994 and where many immigrants in the 1950s and 1960s first stood on Australian soil. Immigrant Biaggio Signorelli, from Sicily in Italy, landed here in 1954 as did his wife to be, Filipa in 1963. They raised a large dynamic family that went on to grow Doltone House, a collection of event venues around Sydney including one here in the redeveloped wharf building behind the sculpture. Today is Harmony Day, which celebrates the cohesive and inclusive nature of Australia and promotes the benefits of cultural diversity. It is celebrated annually on the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Sydney Wharf, Sydney skyline
Sydney Wharf and the Sydney skyline viewed from Pyrmont Bay. The warehouses on the wharf, which were once part of Sydney's port facilities, have been converted to flats, restaurants and a marina on the bay. A ferry can be seen leaving Darling Harbour, close to King Street Wharf. The Macquarie Bank building that I featured yesterday is in the background and the MLC Centre and Sydney Tower are the tall buildings, further in the distance.

Darling Harbour, The SubWharfyen
The SubWharfyen is a sculpture located on the end of piers 8 & 9 of Sydney Wharf, on Darling Harbour at Pyrmont. This stainless steel sculpture, created by Braddon Snape in 2008, depicts the relationship between people and the sea. Barangaroo, is the area on the opposite side of Darling Harbour that is currently under construction, on the foreshore of the Sydney Central Business District.

Pyrmont Bridge, control tower and gate
This control tower and gate are located on the Pyrmont Bridge, a swing bridge over Cockle Bay in Darling Harbour. The bridge was designed by Percy Allan and opened to traffic in 1902. It was one of the largest spanning swing bridges in the world and one of the first to be powered by electricity. It was closed to traffic in the 1980s when freeways south of Cockle Bay were built but reopened as a pedestrian bridge with the redevelopment of Darling Harbour in 1988. The bridge also carries an elevated monorail which travels between the central business district and Darling Harbour. The monorail track rests on a pivot that allows the track to remain stationary while the bridge swings underneath, so that the monorails can continue to cross even when the bridge is opened for large boats and yachts.
