College Students Sculpture

Often some of the most interesting things are right in your backyard.

I enjoy art and often drive to a city or town to see an exhibit. Yet within a few feet of where I work every day there is a work of art I never really noticed until recently. As you are walking on our central campus you can see water be sprayed up in a large arc and hear it splashing down in a pool.

It appears to have a large silver hula hoop over the top of a sculpture.

But when you are standing next to the fountain and look behind you, you see another similar sculpture on a small rise.

The work is made up of two pools of water and two sculptures. They are connected by a little stream of water that goes under the sidewalk. The first sculpture is made up of three college students.

One of the students is an older man -- a non-traditional college student.

One is a young man with a guitar.

And a young woman who is pregnant.

The water flows from the three college students to the larger pool and you see them a few years later on in life.

The young woman has a baby (and the child is holding a doll).

The older nontraditional student is dressed in a suit and looking at his watch.

And the young man is now holding his guitar out and it appears he is a rock star. Or maybe a local performer. Or maybe a teacher.

After working at this college for six years, this is the first time I really stopped and studied this very nice work. And it is only a few steps from my office.

Some times the best things are right in your backyard. Or closer.
