Happy New Year!

Wishing everyone a very Happy New Year!

Favorite Moment 2010

On this New Year's Day, I wanted to take a look back at my favorite moment of 2010. There were actually a lot of good things that happened but the most memorable moment, at least for me, involved a professional baseball player and umpire.

The player was Armando Galarraga. On June 2, 2010, Galarraga had pitched a perfect game through 8 2/3 innings. No hits. No walks. Just three up, three down.

The last batter hit a ground ball that was thrown to the first baseman. It was a close play and the umpire called the runner .... safe.

Everyone was stunned. How could that have happened? A perfect game - something that is beyond rare - seemed to have happened. And then it did not.

Within moments it was clear from instant replay that the runner was actually out. The umpire had missed the call. However, professional baseball does not use instant replay to review calls.

The next batter came up, grounded out and the game was over. The call could not be changed. No one felt worse about it than the umpire, Jim Joyce. Mr. Joyce is an extremely respected umpire by players, umpires and managers. He is one of the best. Still, like all of us, he is human.

The tears were flowing down his face the next day when he and the pitcher, Armando Galarraga, met at home plate in a show of unity and forgiveness. It was a hard moment to watch. But it was one I will never forget.

The pitcher did get a new car from his Detroit Tigers. And most people will remember him and his near perfect game more than if he had actually gotten credit for the perfect game. Still, what I remember the most is how honorable both men acted through it all.

Jim Joyce and Armando Galarrago were recognized at the 2010 ESPY Award Program this summer. Right after the incident happened and the days that followed both were professional and respectful of each other.

In this day and age of over paid athletes who are often not role models, it is inspiring to see two men who have the character of Jim Joyce and Armando Galarraga.

Thanks for stopping by and Happy New Year to you.

Circular Quay, New Year's Eve

These keen New Year's Eve revellers had already claimed their territory well before midday at Circular Quay yesterday. They had one of the best positions to watch the world's biggest New Year's Eve fireworks displays and celebrations on the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Harbour. The banners along the quay and throughout the city promoted it as NYE X or New Years Eve 2010.

Next Year In Jerusalem

This from the Desiring God blog today:

At the end of every Passover Seder, the Jewish diaspora pronounce the wistful prayer: “Next year in Jerusalem.” It is the deep longing for the promised, peaceful Messianic Jerusalem with a restored Temple—a profound wish that the next year be a happy one.

It seems to me that Christians ought also to say, “Next year in Jerusalem!” rather than wishing one another a “Happy New Year.” For we have come to know the Messiah and he has given us a glimpse of what we long for:

And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away”… (Revelation 21:2-4)

And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it… (Revelation 21:22-24)

No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever. (Revelation 22:3-5)

O Jerusalem! “Happy New Year” is such an empty wish in this age. But the new Jerusalem is coming. And don’t you hope that it is soon?

O Jesus, you promised, “Surely I am coming soon” (Revelation 22:20). Yes, Lord! “Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22:20)

Next year in Jerusalem!

Snowflake Wonder by Elaine Lockey

http://weather.thefuntimesguide.com/2009/01/the_snowflake.php
If you get caught outside finishing up gardening tasks when it begins to snow, chances are you aren’t too interested in stopping to admire it.  But when you have the opportunity, “snowflake watching” will transport you right back to your childhood sense of wonder.

Snow crystals are single crystals of ice while a snowflake is one or more crystals stuck together. Water molecules create a hexagonal lattice that is formed when water vapor condenses directly into ice in clouds when the temperature is freezing or below. There are several factors that influence the shape of snowflakes: humidity, temperature, and air currents.  Colder temperatures create more intricate shapes – sharper tips and more branching.

It is commonly believed that snowflakes are perfectly symmetrical.  This is much more the exception rather than the rule.  Snowflakes are generally lob-sided and irregular. Symmetrical ones just tend to be photographed more! Snowflakes always have six sides or six points due to the shape and bonding of the water molecules.

You’ve probably heard that no two snowflakes are alike.  This is more or less true. No two snowflakes are exactly alike down to their molecular level, however it is possible that there could be two visibly matching patterned flakes at some time if the environmental conditions for their growth were the same, although that is hard to fathom. William A. “Snowflake” Bentley (1865-1931), a self-educated farmer, spent years photographing snow crystals, capturing more than 5000 during his lifetime.  His first snow crystal was photographed in 1885. He never was able to capture the same snowflake pattern twice. Snowflakes come in all different sizes too. Guinness World Records lists the largest snowflake as found January 1887 in Fort Keogh, Montana with one allegedly measuring 15 inches wide and 8 inches thick! That must have been quite a snowfall to see.

Snowflake watching is easy to do.  Take a piece of black construction paper and head outside to see what kinds of flakes you can gather on it. The black background really helps the flakes show up.  Some snow days produce more interesting flakes than others so be patient.  An inexpensive magnifying glass can really enhance this activity.

There are many different types of snow crystals, but the most commonly known ones are the stars, dendrites (my favorite), columns, plates, capped columns, needles and irregular forms. A quick internet search will yield images of these various types. See if you can group the snowflakes that you see into these categories. What’s your favorite type?

I find that a good snowstorm does wonders for my ability to write and read.  Writer Nathaniel Hawthorne felt the same way. “Snowflakes” collected in Twice-Told Tales, 1837, is a wonderful read as the snowflakes come down. http://www.islandnet.com/~see/weather/arts/snowflakes.htm
