There is No Rose

There are many beautiful Christmas songs. One of my favorites is There is No Rose. This was written in about 1420 and is a traditional English song.

This wood cut image appeared in the Church of England's Book of Common Prayer in 1846 - more than 400 years after the song was written. (Thank you to Blog by the Sea, December 13, 2008, for this information.)

You don't hear this song on the radio or find it on CDs in stores.

The Luther College Nordic Choir does a beautiful rendition of this work. You can literally hear the angels singing.

There is no rose of such virtue
As is the rose that bare Jesu;
Alleluia.

For in this rose contained was
Heaven and earth in little space;
Res miranda.

By that rose we may well see
That he is God in persons three,
Pari forma.

The angels sungen the shepherds to:
Gloria in excelsis deo:
Gaudeamus.

Leave we all this worldly mirth,
And follow we this joyful birth
Transeamus.

Alleluiah, res miranda,
Pares forma, gaudeamus,
Transeamus
